Superior Steel has a qualified detailing staff and we detail most of our work in-house. We believe this allows us to better serve our customers by having complete control over shop and erection drawings.
If the project requires it, we also have access to qualified outside sources. Whenever outside detailers are used, we appoint one of our in-house detailers to lead the project and ensure the job is detailed to SSI standards. We have many years experience with these sources who also use 3D detailing systems.
We use SDS/2 3D detailing software from Design Data. This powerful software allows our detailers to work out framing and connection problems in the 3D environment before they become a problem in the field.
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the process of generating and managing building data during its life cycle. This requires interoperability between design and detailing systems. We have completed many successful projects using this process using the CIS/2 protocol.
BIM was used on the Baptist West Hospital in Knoxville, TN. The project was featured in an article in Modern Steel Construction magazine. Using CIS/2, we were able to import the engineers design analysis model into our detailing system which significantly reduced the project schedule.
SSI directly employs a structural engineer who is on site full time and is currently licensed in 11 states with the capability for licensure by comity in most other states. Typical engineering duties on the majority of projects include connection design and analysis, and stair and handrail analysis. If project specifications require the fabricator to furnish connection design, we can furnish complete connection analysis sealed by our engineer.
Recently we have provided entire building envelope engineering services design including permit sets of stamped and signed drawings for design-build projects. We have performed specialty designs of deep long-span trusses and crane girder and material handling structures. Superior Steel provides design assistance on a project by project basis and can make recommendations based on value engineering to help reduce overall project costs for the general contractor and the owner.
We use the RAM Structural System by Bentley Systems. RAM is a 3D static and dynamic analysis and design program for structural engineers. It is used for lateral frame analysis and design of building systems under lateral, dynamic, and gravity loads. On design-build projects we can export data from the RAM system using the CIS/2 protocol and import it into our detailing system. This can significantly reduce project duration and cost.
